Limestone being a sedimentary rock is composed of sea bottom. The stone varies in appearance and physical properties depending upon the existing conditions in the environment while it was being formed. Some limestone contains fossils large enough to see while others require a microscope to identify the small animal skeletons that make up many limestones. The hardness of different limestones vary greatly as well as color patterns and strength.

The beauty of limestone is mainly in the softness of texture and color compared to other stones. With most varieties there is a pastel color base. Colors range from white to beige to pink, yellow and gray. Patterns vary from monotone to highly variegated, striped or speckled. The stone has a soft velvety appearance which is warm to the eye and it invites the touch.
